Interview
with Davey Havok
The singer for AFI
Interview by
Colby Buzzell
WHAT IS THE CURRENT AFI LINEUP?
Currently, we are: me Davey Havoc, I sing; Jade plays guitar, Hunter plays bass,
and Adam plays drums.
What ever happened to Geoff and Mark?
Well, I'm not sure what Mark is doing right now, and Geoff is playing in Tiger
Army right now.
Do you miss that old line-up at all?
No. (laughter) No, I don't really.
How is this
line-up different musically and personality-wise from the original lineup?
Well the thing about, well, the personality wise for one thing, everybody who is
in the band right now wants to be in the band, and wants to do music for the
rest of their lives... loves touring, loves playing, and loves writing, so um
that's really worlds apart from the situation that we had in the past with band
members. And then musically, for one thing, like Jade, I've always wanted to
work with Jade. I think we're more complete as a band with this line-up.
Tell us a
little bit about your new release "The Art Of Drowning" What can AFI
fans expect on this album?
"The Art Of Drowning", I think for me , is one of my favorite things
we've done. I think it's our most dynamic album. It's very dark, but at the same
time, there's a lot of mobility, and a heavy kind of aggression in it. I don't
know, I think everybody could enjoy it.
WHAT ARE YOU
THE MOST EXCITED ABOUT ON THE NEW ALBUM?
We've really done some stuff that we've never done before, there's a little drum
machine part that I think is really cool and I liked how that worked in alot. We
just got to do different types of songs that we've never done before, so its
always fun to do different stuff. Its a very...varied album.
HOW DID YOU
COME UP WITH THE ALBUM NAME "THE ART OF DROWNING"?
Jade and I came
up with it together, and I think it really encompasses the lyrical content of
the whole album pretty well.
EACH AFI ALBUM
SEEMS TO HAVE ITS OWN SOUND AND ITS OWN INFLUENCES. WHAT INSPIRES THIS ALBUM,
AND IS IT CONSCIOUS DECISION, OR DOES IT JUST HAPPEN?
It really just
happens. We don't sit down and say, "Okay, this album is going to sound
like this, and this next album is going to sound like that." We just sit
down and write songs. If we enjoy the songs we keep them...if we don't, we get
rid of them. We really don't have any sort of regard for what sort of
preconcieved notion of what we're supposed to be, or what type of music we're
supposed to play, we just write songs. If we like them, we like them...if we
don't, you know? Whether its punk rock, or hardcore- or whatever we're supposed
to be.
LYRICALLY, HOW
DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED WRITING YOUR LYRICS?
Well, I've definitely gotten far more serious and introspective, and emotional,
than in the very beginning. A lot of my lyrics have become more cryptic, and not
as straight forward as they once were. I'd like to think I've gotten more
artistic in my song writing. Lyrically speaking, I'm definitely far happier with
my lyrics not than I've ever been.
